A Sociopathic National Pastime

A sociopathic national pastime

A sociopathic piece of garbage walked into a California synagogue yesterday and opened fire. Several were injured and one was killed.

But what followed was something just as horrific and awful.

Immediately, social media denizens retreated into their factions and used this attack to confirm their own sectarian view of America.

There were the gun-haters who railed against those who offered thoughts and prayers to the families while blaming the NRA.

Then there were those who presumed the sociopathic piece of garbage was a (and take your pick) 1) White Nationalist, 2) Islamist, 3) Trump supporter.

I don’t know what disgusted me more – the crime or the craven politicization of the crime.

I saw this tweet from Mike Cernovich and it said everything I was feeling.

He’s right.  The positioning and maneuvering after these evil acts have become a sociopathic national pastime.

Every time such a tragedy happens, social media turns into March Madness except without basketball and heavy on the madness.

Even those who share sympathy and grief come under attack from the different factions of this sociopathic national pastime.

What kind of sickness is it when on Twitter the hashtag #NoMoreThoughtsAndPrayers gets used even by an elected member of Congress?

In this sociopathic national pastime, politicians can’t wait to find a way to exploit the murder of innocents for their pet political positions.

It’s obscene.

And — Cernovich is right — it’s sociopathic.

The murderers get turned into video game shooters each faction hopes to manipulate and control to gain advantage.  While the victims are nothing more than faceless NPCs – unknown and quickly forgotten.

When the identity of the piece of garbage is discovered, the game shifts to “Quick! Find ways to show he isn’t one of us!”

What kind of a society are we that so many are so willing to exploit a tragedy for political advantage?

And all that attention — all that social media obsession — only fuels the next piece of garbage with a grudge.

This has to stop.

Don’t play the game.

Because this isn’t a game.  These are real, living human beings who have been attacked by an evil man.

No matter what we do, there will be evil in this world.  And it manifests in many ways.  And yesterday’s attack at the Poway synagogue was one such act of evil.

But the social media maneuverings exploiting this act to gain political advantage is, in itself, just as evil.

Side Note:

I am not doing at all well. As was probably obvious by my lack of posting yesterday. My rheumatologist and I did a little experiment with my drug cocktail over the last ten days that was not successful. While the agonizing side effects lessened, the crippling Lupus symptoms came roaring back. As a result, we curtailed the experiment three weeks early, and put me back on the full cocktail. It will probably take a few days for my symptoms to level off. Until then, I’m doing my best to post. But when even sitting up and typing hurt like the dickens, I can’t guarantee I’ll be at my best.

Love is the answer? Give me a break. No one can define it so something undefinable is the answer?

    Praying for a physician breakthrough.
    In the meantime, Romans 8:11
If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
