You know as well as I do that when Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, the news media was salivating at the chance to turn Harvey into President Trump’s Katrina.
And, boy, did it not work.
Trump’s handling of Hurricane Harvey received praise across the board — even from Democrat politicians in Texas.
Then came Hurricane Irma.
Once again, the news media was champing at the bit to portray it as Trump’s Katrina.
And once again, their were dashed on the rocks of reality.
But third time’s a charm.
And here we are again.
Hurricane Maria devastating Puerto Rico seems tailor-made for the “It’s Trump’s Katrina” narrative.
They speak Spanish in Puerto Rico, so the media can claim Trump is racist.
(Though, how speaking Spanish translates to Puerto Ricans being a different race, I will never know).
And they have the perfect Political Prop in San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz.
But the attempt to cast Hurricane Maria as Trump’s Katrina isn’t going to work.
First of all, the facts on the ground do not support the claims that President Trump dropped the ball.
Now, I realize that facts have nothing to do with it. We’re taking about the mainstream news media after all.
And the facts on the ground didn’t support the claims that Bush screwed up in New Orleans either.
But the reason it won’t work this time is simple.
We don’t trust the news media anymore.
In fact, we know that when it comes to Donald Trump, they’re probably lying.
It also doesn’t help that when the Trumps went to Texas after Hurricane Harvey, the news media acted like assholes over Melania’s shoes.
These guys have discredited themselves so completely the likelihood that anyone who isn’t already rabidly anti-Trump will believe what they’re saying about Puerto Rico is slim to none.
Without an inherent trust in the news media, the same kind of narrative they used after Katrina simply cannot work.
But the other reason it won’t work is also obvious.
Donald Trump is not George W. Bush.
The news media keeps making the same mistakes over and over again when it comes to President Trump.
They’ve tried to use every smear tactic that has worked against other Republicans. But when the news media use them against Trump they slide off him as if he’s been Scotch-Guarded.
Unlike Mr. Bush, President Trump won’t just let these assholes lie. He will call them out on it. And, unlike George Bush, he will go around the news media and speak directly to the people.
I don’t see this as a problem with Donald Trump – not in the least.
How many of us back when George W. Bush was President wished like hell that he would confront these lying cretins?
But he never did. And that’s why their attacks on Bush after Katrina took hold.
But Donald Trump isn’t George W. Bush.
And he will not let their lies stand.
The other problem the media has in successfully advancing the “This is Trump’s Katrina” narrative, I’ve already discussed.
And as I said earlier, the more we learn about Ray Nagin 2.0 (aka San Juan Mayor Cruz), the more disingenuous and fake her hysteria and posturing become.
If anything. Hurricane Maria is Mayor Cruz’s Katrina.
She is putting politics and partisanship ahead of doing her job.
And she’s become so enamored with the media attention she is getting that she’s making an utter fool of herself. Especially since all parties involved are calling her out for her incompetence.
It’s terrifically sad to me that the news media would exploit the suffering and hardship of the people of Puerto Rico just to smear Donald Trump.
And I wish I could say it’s a surprise.
But sadly, it isn’t.
Which, come to think of it, is another reason this “It’s Trump’s Katrina” narrative isn’t going to work.
