Everything Old is New Again

Everything old is new again

Lately, as I’ve been reading the news, I find myself singing, “Everything old is new again,” – a little ditty by the late Australian singer/songwriter Peter Allen.

The fact is, if you are too young to remember what it was like when Ronald Reagan was President, don’t worry.

You know exactly what it was like — even if you weren’t born yet.

Because we’re living it all over again.

Take for example the Left’s defense and embrace of the totalitarian regime in North Korea.

Everything old is new again, my friends.

This is exactly how the Left behaved when Reagan was President.

They attacked him for being belligerent and bellicose. And they believed he was unnecessarily provoking the Soviet Union.

Who can forget these lyrics from Sting’s 1985 song “Russians?”

There is no historical precedent
To put the words in the mouth of the President
There’s no such thing as a winnable war
It’s a lie we don’t believe anymore
Mr. Reagan says we will protect you
I don’t subscribe to this point of view
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

Everything old is new again.

In the 1980s, Ronald Reagan was accused of being a warmonger. He was called a fascist and a racist. The Left believed Ronald Reagan was so reckless that he would get us all killed.

And of course they accused him of being mentally unfit to lead.

President Reagan’s mission to destroy the Soviet Union was viewed as insane.

And the Left despised him so much they were willing to embrace a murderous, dictatorial regime that threatened the world and enslaved its own people.

Here we are back to the same kind of rhetoric.

Everything old is new again.

When you get right down to it, Leftists embrace our enemies any time we have a President who is unafraid to stand up to them.

This is why they loved Obama.

Obama didn’t stand up to our enemies; he surrendered to them.

But just like Ronald Reagan, President Trump refuses to pretend that America’s enemies can be cowed with appeasement and “collective cooperation.”

What the Left really objects to is a strong, sovereign America.

It’s unfair, you see.

We shouldn’t make other countries feel bad by conveying strength or advancing national sovereignty.

And it’s the height of arrogance to believe in American Exceptionalism.

That is exactly why they despised Ronald Reagan.

And precisely why they loved Barack Obama.

Obama was one of them.

That’s why he apologized for American “arrogance” and accused us of being “dismissive” and “derisive.”

And it’s why his response to American Exceptionalism was to claim that all countries believe they are exceptional.

The Left finds this whole idea of American sovereignty unseemly and inappropriate.

They’re embarrassed by patriotism and nationalism.

And for some odd reason that bothers them more than a dictatorial regime that threatens the world and enslaves its own people.

At the end of the day, what the Left hates is America.

And rather than see us as the shining city on a hill that other nations would aspire to be, they want us to aspire to be nothing more than just another country – unexceptional, indistinguishable and accommodating.

Just like they did in the 1980s.

There’s nothing new to any of this.

In fact, the only difference today is that after eight years of Barack Obama, the Left believed it finally had the upper hand.

They really believed that they won the fight for the soul of the nation.

Then along comes Donald Trump to ruin it for them.

And everything old is new again.

And in the end Reagan was right. He won -along with Maggie Thatcher . They made one heck of a team!

God grant Trump is proven right!
