I’ve shared this personal story about amends before. But I’m sharing it again because once again it is pertinent.
When I was a child, my brother and I stole some toys from a kid. They were really cool toys and we didn’t have anything like them, so we took them.
When my mom found out, boy was she furious. She devised the perfect punishment to see to it we never did anything like that again.
In addition to telling us we needed to take the toys back and apologize to the kid, she also told us to pick out our favorite toys. And when we went to returned the stolen toys, we also had to give the kid our favorite toys as well.
It was a painful lesson in making amends. But it worked. I never stole again.
When you make amends for a wrong you’ve done, it is you, personally, who must pay the price in making it right.
You don’t outsource your amends to someone else.
Let’s use the anecdote from my childhood.
If my mom had told my brother and me we could keep the toys we stole, but we had to steal some toys from some other kid and give those stolen toys to the kid we robbed, not only would that not right the wrong, but it would have made the wrong worse.
But apparently that’s exactly how Liz Warren perceives making amends.
Not by paying the price for her deceit herself, but by forcing someone else to pay the price for her.
Elizabeth Warren perpetrated a fraud for decades – pretending to be Native American when she wasn’t. And she used this fraud to advance her career – all the way to Harvard University where she enjoyed the title of “First Native American woman of color” on their faculty.
Warren’s fraud was exposed and rather than personally make amends for appropriating Native American identity to advance her career, Liz wants long-dead Medal of Honor winners to pay the price for her.
And she’s using her position in the United States Senate to do it.
That’s flat-out craven and cynical.
You don’t freaking outsource your amends to a third party. That’s not how Amends work.
If Warren really wanted to make things right, she personally needs to do something to make it right.
Maybe, and this is my mother’s daughter talking here, but maybe Liz could calculate the amount of money she earned while posing as Harvard’s “Native American Woman of Color” professor then donate that sum to a Native American charity.
And not just quietly donate it by mailing them a check. No.
Liz should have to take the check to them, apologize for exploiting Native Americans for personal gain, and then hand them the check explaining that the amount is equal to what she earned by pretending to be a Cherokee when she wasn’t.
That would be making amends – personally making things right.
Amends require a couple of things. That you personally bear the responsibility – no matter how embarrassing or painful — and that you change your behavior so that it doesn’t happen again.
Liz isn’t just avoiding taking personal responsibility. But this bill is yet another example of her doing the same damn thing all over again.
She is using Indian activists’ causes to whitewash over her decades-long fraud in hopes that doing so will help pave her way to the White House.
By championing this virtue-signaling bill, Elizabeth Warren is once again exploiting Native Americans for her own personal advancement.
She has learned absolutely nothing from this whole sorry experience.
There is not a single thing about Liz Warren’s actions that amount to making amends. It is all about personal advancement and political expedience.
Sure, she’s sorry about the fraud. But only because she got caught.
Being sorry, however, isn’t the same as making amends.
And in the nearly fourteen months since Liz Warren stuck her neck out and publicized that DNA test, she has done nothing, not one thing, to right the wrong on which her entire career was made.
