Gorsuch Confirmation: Day 1

confirmation

Well, I grew sick and tired of the testimony of James Comey. So I flipped to the livestream of the Gorsuch Confirmation before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

I'm a bit of a political junkie, I confess.

But this first day of Gorsuch's confirmation is leaving me with the overwhelming urge to bang my head on my desk.

Now, if anything, it gives us a peek into the difference between an impartial judiciary and a very partial United States Senate.

Ideally, the judge is not supposed to begin a case with a predetermined ruling in mind.

Note I say “ideally.” Obama appointees fail that basic test each and every time.

On the other hand, United States Senators are apparently happy to begin this confirmation hearing with a predetermined ruling in mind.

Though the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee included the caveat “as I weigh on whether I will confirm you,” don't believe them.

They know how they're going to vote before even one single question is asked of Judge Gorsuch.

You only needed to listen to them prattle on about “voting rights being stripped from Americans” or “big money in politics” to know they have no desire to confirm Judge Gorsuch no matter what he says.

So much for “The world's most deliberative body.”

These Democrats have no plans to deliberate. They plan to pontificate and showboat for the cameras. And then they're going to vote No.

Call me cynical, but don't find that the least bit surprising.

And before you say, “Well oh yeah?! Republicans didn't vote to confirm Obama's Supreme Court picks!” Let me remind you that nine Republicans voted to confirm Sonia Sotomayor and five voted to confirm Elena Kagan.

I have no doubt that Democrats like Dianne Feinstein, Dick Durbin, Patrick Lahey or Al Franken -- or any of the other clowns on the Senate Judiciary Committee -- don't give the hairy ass of a rat how Judge Gorsuch answers any of their questions. They oppose him now. And no matter his answers, they will oppose him when this confirmation hearing is done.

If anything, I feel sorry for Judge Gorsuch having to sit there hour after hour while Senators give their speeches. Frankly, I don't know why he has to be there. Nobody is asking him anything.

He's a far better human being than I am. I'd be rolling my eyes and sighing heavily every time a Democrat was speaking.

But then again, I'm not a judge.

And as enjoyable as it is to watch Republican Senators try to remind their Democrat colleagues that judges are not supposed to be partisan hacks, I really don't know why they televise this portion of the confirmation hearing.
