Happy Birthday, Mom!

My Mom turns 85 today. And I couldn’t let the day go by without wishing her a very happy birthday.

Mom

She’s a knock-out, isn’t she? I always thought my Mom looked a lot like Ingrid Bergman. You can totally see it in this picture, can’t you?

I owe my Mom a heck of a lot.

Not only do I get my sense of humor, stubbornness and distaste for idle chitchat from her. But I also get my fierce sense of independence and loyalty. Not to mention my love of gardening.

She is German by birth and a proud American by choice.

She still enjoys German cooking. Like sauerbraten and potato dumplings.

I wish I could cook like my Mom. But alas…

Though, I did make my first sauerbraten about a year ago. And, though it was tasty, it wasn’t nearly as good as Mom’s.

My Mom spent about thirty years as a foster parent. I can’t count the number of children she and my Dad took into their home. Although, I’m sure she could not only tell you how many, but also each and every one of their names.

Mom is a faithful fan of PatriotRetort.com despite the fact that she refuses to use a computer. I print up every single post and deliver them to her at least a couple times a week.

Frankly, I think the person hardest hit by Lupus interfering with my work is my Mom. She would much rather I post twenty times a day so she had more to read. And as much as I want to please my Mom, the limits Lupus has been putting on me lately make that infinitely difficult.

If you’ve read the About Dianny page, you know it was my Mom who introduced me to the books of Ann Coulter. And it was reading Ann’s book Slander that got me to really reevaluate my committed Liberalism.

I owe my Mom for helping me escape the naval-gazing, insufferable Liberal positions I once held.

In that sense, you enjoy PatriotRetort.com in large part because of my Mom’s influence on my life.

She’s really an amazing woman. And I am so proud to be her daughter.

Happy birthday, Mom.

Mmmmmm…from your picture I can smell the bacon, butter, onions…the beginning of every great German meal! Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag!

Your Mom might like this personal anecdote. When my wife and I lived in rural Germany in the early 1980s, our neighbor turned 40. To celebrate the occasion, my wife and I decided to sing the well-known Birthday Song in German. We went next door for the party and when she opened the door we began singing “Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag, Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag…” She looked puzzled by what we were doing and called the rest of the party-goers to come and listen. “Noch einmal (Once more),” she asked. So we did. A dozen puzzled looks faced us. Then it dawned on them what we were doing. “Ah,” they said, “here is how we sing Happy Birthday in Germany” and they proceeded to sing the well-known Birthday Song in ENGLISH! (For some of my neighbors, it was the only English they could speak). Who knew Germans sang the Birthday Song in English?! Hope your Mom has a great many more.

Dear, you are a most thoughtful daughter to offer her this birthday tribute that we all can enjoy! I’m awaiting the day that my 54 year old ‘liberal socialist daughter’, as she calls herself, will ‘really reevaluate my committed Liberalism’! I was about the same age when I first voted Republican after years of following the family Democratic tradition. Of course, today’s Dem Party is not the same as past generations and neither is the GOP.
A Churchill-credited quote: Show me a young Conservative and I’ll show you someone with no heart. Show me an old Liberal and I’ll show you someone with no brains.
Another ‘somewhat’ quote…One is a Liberal when young and has knowledge but a Conservative when old and has wisdom.
    Happy Birthday to your mother!
