Happy New Year 2019

Happy New Year 2019
Artist: Janet Burroff

Happy 2019 everybody!

It has become a tradition here at PatriotRetort.com to feature the work of artist Janet Burroff every New Year’s Day.  And 2019 is no exception.

I love her stuff.  It’s so vibrant.

I remember when I was a senior in high school, we were sitting on the steps of the school one afternoon talking about where we thought we’d be at the Turn of the Century.

The part that horrified us was realizing we’d all be 37 years old.

We were nineteen years away from the Turn of the Century when we sat on those steps of LaFayette High School. And the year 2000 sounded so futuristic to us 18-year-old kids in 1981.

Then again, when you’re only 18, even nineteen years in the future feels like a century away.

And here we are.  Now nineteen years to the other side of the Turn of the Century.

And the first thing I noticed was this round of nineteen years flew by.

Odd how that happens when you get older.

The first of January is just another day.  We experience no physiological changes moving from 2018 to 2019. Its only significance is what we assign to it. As far as the cosmos is concerned, it’s just Tuesday.

Here at Casa Dianny today is just like yesterday. The only difference I experiences was taking down the old calendar and hanging the 2019 White House calendar I got from my parents.

But despite that, a New Year always comes with a sense of anticipation – and probably a little trepidation.

(And, perhaps for some of you, a little hangover.)

New Year’s is significant because we make the conscious decision to focus on the passing of time.

When you think about it, the passing of time is like breathing.

Breathing happens effortlessly and without any conscious decision on our part.

We don’t even notice our breath going in and out unless we stop and make the effort to focus on it.

The same goes for time.  It just passes without conscious thought or effort on our part.

And once a year, when the clock strikes midnight, we stop and make the effort to focus on this passing of time.

Then life goes on.

And once again, time, like our breathing, returns to being an unconscious, effortless part of our existence.

So while we’re still focused on the passing of Time, I will quickly say, Happy New Year and welcome to 2019.

The hangover can be avoided (straight whisky, water back; stay hydrated)
All that pesky anticipation/trepidation, is life … day to day, … moment to moment —-
Ain’t it great ? It’s how we know we’re still alive.
Blessings on you Dianny, and all those you love and care for and about.
