About seventeen years ago an acquaintance of mine graciously offered to set up meetings for me with a couple talent agents. At the time, she was one of the most well-respected television writers in Hollywood and her recommendation went a long way.
So off to Hollywood I went.
The first meeting was with an agency whose offices are in the Playboy building in Beverly Hills.
I jokingly told my writer friend, “Should I read something into that?”
And she laughed and said, “You have no idea.”
After I’d been in Hollywood a few days, I called her just to check in. And she asked me how things went.
I told her bluntly, “I don’t think I can live or work here.”
After a moment she said she wasn’t surprised.
I’m too decent a person, she said.
“In Hollywood, 99% of the time, you’re stuck having to choose between two equally repugnant options.”
As an example, she told me about one of the executive producers she worked with on a very well-known show. He would only let her pitch story ideas while he laid on the floor and she walked on his naked back in her bare feet.
And that, she said, was mild compared to most things producers expect.
But what she said next convinced me that working in television was not for Dianny.
For anyone new to Hollywood, she said, getting a foot in the door often means having to sell your soul.
And I didn’t want to sell my soul.
No wonder Hollywood people are so bitter and angry.
They’ve sold out their own dignity and self-respect. And they’ve willingly chosen to prostitute themselves — and others — just to get ahead.
So how do they redeem themselves? Well, they embrace social justice causes that let them feel morally upright and superior when they aren’t.
In that respect, Harvey Weinstein being publicly exposed isn’t just going to hurt him.
I think it’s going to completely discredit all those phony Hollywood Social Justice Warriors.
For three decades these same hectoring, sanctimonious “celebrities” let this kind of reprehensible behavior happen without saying “boo.”
And yet they presume to lecture us on how to live.
It’s really unbelievable, isn’t it?
And when you consider that Weinstein is just the tip of the iceberg, these guys have some nerve taking the moral high ground with us.
Getting caught turning a blind eye to this kind of repugnant behavior exposes their own hypocrisy.
And let’s be honest. If there’s one thing Americans despise more than anything else it’s self-righteous preening and condescending lectures from morally bankrupt people.
