Look who’s turning nine!

Mary turns nine
This is her serious face.

Today my pitbull mix, Mary of Bethany turns nine.

Isn’t she adorable?

Mary is a rescue who was found wandering the streets of Solvay nine years ago in October.  She was filthy, stinky and hungry when a good Samaritan took her to Fairmount Animal Hospital.

A friend of mine had asked me just a few weeks earlier if I was looking for a dog now that my backyard was fenced-in.

I told her, “I won’t need to look.”  I just knew that when the time was right, the dog would find me.

Well, this friend happens to work at Fairmount Animal Hospital.  So when Mary was dropped there by that good Samaritan nine years ago, my friend sent me a text with a picture of the raggedy little pup and a message telling me she thinks my new dog just found me.

So I went up the next morning and met her.

What a bundle of energy she was!  And the smell.  Holy mackerel, she stunk so bad.  But from the moment we met, it was love at first sight.  She grinned from ear-to-ear and snuggled against me.  And in the midst of all that love, I kind of forgot that she stunk to high heaven.

Everybody says, adopt a rescue because they need love. And, yeah.  That’s true, they do.

But really, rescue dogs bring love.  That’s what Mary did from the moment we met.  And she brought all that love home with her. Even my cat Buffy snuggles with Mary – purring wildly the whole time.

Mary has been my constant companion for nine years now.

I don’t even remember what life was like without her. It’s as if she’s always been a part of the family.

She still has that green moon. Only it’s not green anymore.

The truth is, I don’t know the exact date of Mary’s birth. But the day I brought her home with me was October 22, 2010.  At that time, the vet said she was about four months old.  So I decided to make June 22nd Mary’s birthday.  And every year since for the last nine years, we’ve celebrated Mary’s birth on this day.

Since it is a beautiful, sunny, cool summer day, Mary and I will spend birthday number nine out in the yard.  I’ll do some weeding while she runs around like a goof and gathers sticks for me to throw. And for dinner tonight, Mary’s getting her favorite: bacon.

Sure, it might not sound like an action-packed life. But it is the life Mary and I have enjoyed for nine years now.  And, I hope, the life we will continue to enjoy for many years to come.

Adopt a rescue.  You’ll be amazed at how much love both you and your rescue dog will bring each other.

Any old how, happy birthday, Mary.

You may be nine, but you’ll always be my pup.

When our first dog, Chi Chi the black poodle, died our vet at the time had a Lhasa Apso who was found wandering the streets. He had tags, but no one could find the owner. He was matted to hell and stunk like crazy. We named him Durty Hairy. Didn’t like being confined to a house until he figured out we fed him every day and didn’t have to settle for caterpillars and also went for a nice long walks. My only complaint is he obviously liked tuna and noodles. The only time he ‘stole’ human food. What a character. Happy B-day Mary!

The unconditional love dogs bring into our lives is unparalleled. When you walk in the door, they’re so happy they can’t control it – their whole body shakes. Having had (at least) one dog in my home for some 30 years now, I can’t imagine life without one. There’s an old joke I heard once: Want to know who loves you more, your wife or your dog? Lock them both in the trunk of your car for an hour and see who’s glad to see you! May you 2 wonderful gals enjoy many more happy years together!
