For several days now, we’ve been waiting for Meryl Streep to weigh in on the despicable behavior of her good friend Harvey Weinstein.
And she didn’t disappoint.
In fact, Meryl Streep actually deployed the Obama Defense.
She didn’t know about it until she read it in the news.
In her statement, Meryl said in part:
One thing can be clarified. Not everybody knew. Harvey supported the work fiercely, was exasperating but respectful with me in our working relationship, and with many others with whom he worked professionally. I didn’t know about these other offenses…
Until she read about them in the New York Times.
Who believes that?
I did not know about his financial settlements with actresses and colleagues; I did not know about his having meetings in his hotel room, his bathroom, or other inappropriate, coercive acts.
Listen, I spent twenty years around actors. They are a gossipy lot that will not hesitate to share the juicy stories they know about directors, producers or fellow actors.
Unless Meryl Streep lived in a bubble for the last three decades, the likelihood that she didn’t know about this is slim.
But Meryl went on:
And If everybody knew, I don’t believe that all the investigative reporters in the entertainment and the hard news media would have neglected for decades to write about it.
I guess Meryl didn’t read the article from Sharon Waxman over at The Wrap.
In 2004, Waxman – then a writer for the New York Times – wrote a story about Weinstein’s sexual offenses enabled by a Miramax Italy executive Fabrizio Lombardo.
And she got shut down by the very paper that is now receiving praise for exposing Weinstein’s rotten behavior.
I had people on the record telling me Lombardo knew nothing about film, and others citing evenings he organized with Russian escorts.
I also tracked down a woman in London who had been paid off after an unwanted sexual encounter with Weinstein. She was terrified to speak because of her non-disclosure agreement, but at least we had evidence of a pay-off.
The story I reported never ran.
In fact, a big reason Waxman’s story got memory-holed was the New York Times faced pressure from Weinstein himself as well as award-winning actors Russell Crowe and Matt Damon.
After intense pressure from Weinstein, which included having Matt Damon and Russell Crowe call me directly to vouch for Lombardo and unknown discussions well above my head at the Times, the story was gutted.
But Meryl Streep is certain that if everybody knew the “hard news media” would have reported it.
Sorry, Meryl, but no sale.
The perversity and depravity of Hollywood is hardly a well-guarded secret.
And it certainly isn’t hidden from those who work there.
So you’ll have to excuse me, Meryl. But I wasn’t born yesterday.
And your claim of ignorance is about as believable as Obama’s nonsensical claims that he only learned of his own scandals when he read about them in the news.
