For more than a year now, the news media has been defending itself against President Trump’s claims that it is nothing but “Fake News.”
To hear them tell it, not only are they “real news,” they’re also the Supreme Guardians of Truth and Democracy.
President Trump’s attacks against them are a threat to a Free Press and just like Hitler!
They won’t be intimidated!
And they won’t be silenced!
But then along comes this explosive story from Politico about Barack Obama, the Iran Deal, Hezbollah and Project Cassandra.
And suddenly, these Guardians of Truth and Democracy fall silent.
Or, as David Harsanyi put it in the New York Post yesterday, it’s a deafening silence.
The scandal surrounding the Obama Administration’s obstruction of Project Cassandra in order to secure their precious deal with the state sponsor of terror should be a huge-ass story.
But where are the reports from these Guardians of Truth and Democracy?
Well, apparently they can be silenced — provided being silent protects Barack Obama’s so-called “scandal-free” legacy.
Now swap out “Trump” for “Obama” and “Russia” for “Iran” and imagine the eruption these revelations would generate. Because, by any conceivable journalistic standard, this scandal should’ve triggered widespread coverage and been plastered on front pages across the country. By any historic standard, the scandal should elicit outrage regarding the corrosion of governing norms from pundits and editorial boards.
Yet, as it turns out, there’s an exceptionally good chance most of your neighbors and colleagues haven’t heard anything about it.
CNN spent more time on the President’s Diet Coke consumption than Project Cassandra.
Of course, they could’ve spent thirty seconds on Diet-Coke-Gate, they still would have spent more time on it than Project Cassandra.
It always happens, doesn’t it?
President Trump says something explosive. And the news media springs into action to “debunk” his claim.
But over time, Trump’s claims turn out to be true.
And for more than year he has accused the news media of being corrupt, partisan fakers.
Then along comes this explosive report about Project Cassandra — handing the news media a perfect opportunity to prove the president wrong.
And instead they stay silent.
In other words, ignoring this Hezbollah scandal once again vindicates President Trump.
Despite all their protestations to the contrary, the news media, as he said, cannot be trusted to report the facts.
More from Harsanyi:
What makes the media blackout particularly shameful is that the story isn’t a partisan hit job. It was written by a well-regarded journalist at a major outlet. The story has two on-the-record sources — which is more than we can say for the vast majority of so-called scoops about the Russian “collusion” investigation. One of these sources, David Asher, was an illicit finance expert at the Pentagon who was tapped to run the investigation. There’s no plausible reason to ignore him or the story.
If the news media really wanted to prove the President wrong, they would be all over this story – objectively reporting it, chasing down their own sources to confirm it, and giving it the airtime it requires.
But they won’t, will they?
Because at the end of the day, they aren’t the Guardians of Truth and Democracy.
They are the Guardians of Obama’s Failing Legacy.
They are Fake News.
