John Nolte has a pretty good column over at the Daily Wire about this weekend’s civil disobedience during the production of Julius Caesar.
Here’s a bit from his column:
The Civil Rights movement was not “peaceful.” Far from it. Certainly it was non-violent, but non-violence is not the same as peaceful. In pursuit of the most righteous of causes, and after decades of standing by their lofty principles, the freedom riders dropped their op-ed pens and took to the streets, ignored the law, disrupted lives, violated private property rights, openly taunted their enemies.
In other words, through the art of civil disobedience, they sued for peace.
And it is now time that we sue for peace, and do so through the art of non-violent, civil disobedience.
What happened over the weekend in Central Park was in defense of our civil rights, which are under direct attack, not just by hard-left activists, but by powerful American institutions (the media, Democrats, Hollywood, corporations), those who sponsor, appease, and justify relentless attempts, including escalating violence, to silence and subjugate us.
I really should have stopped reading when I got to the end of the column. Reading the comments at the Daily Wire can sometimes be tiresome and frustrating.
From most of the commenters there (and at other NeverTrump sites), I have learned that I am nothing but a mindless, slack-jawed “Trumpkin” who bows at the feet of the Cheeto-faced Buffoon. And, they assure me, I’m not really a conservative.
Who needs that kind of snottiness?
But, like a horrifying car accident, my eyes would not look away.
Nolte’s column was met with the typical harrumphing and “well-I-nevering” from those whose hatred for Donald Trump and the “Trumpkins” has rendered them nothing more than impotent Monday morning quarterbacks.
They won’t get in the game, but they sure as hell know how the game should be played.
And naturally, they insist we continue playing by Marquess of Queensberry rules. The very “Gentleman Loser” rules that have gotten us nowhere over the previous eight years.
I said last year that the NeverTrump Republicans are like the Japanese soldiers stranded on obscure islands during World War Two. Thirty years after the war’s end, these guys still thought the war was going on.
And clearly these Trump-haters are still fighting the Republican primary – seemingly unaware that not only are the primaries over, but the election is as well.
Reading through those comments got me so mad, I needed to step away from my desk and focus on something else.
But apparently my brain didn’t get the memo.
Because as I worked on something else, my mind kept turning it over.
Then I remembered something I read several years ago by Andrew Breitbart.
In his book Righteous Indignation, Breitbart wrote:
“I want to teach everyone I know that there’s nothing to fear but fear itself, and that there’s strength in numbers. I’ve been looking directly forward instead of into the rearview mirror, not worrying about what people think about me, and it has empowered me. And it can empower you. Not only can you take assaults, you can weather them and be strengthened by them — and gain the power to punch back, to go on the offensive. Our opponents have spent so many years on the offensive with people lying prone at their feet that they’ve forgotten what it’s like to be on the defensive. If we come after them, they won’t know how to respond.”
This wasn’t a call to wag your finger and harrumph at those who fight back.
It is a call to action.
Breitbart refused to surrender the narrative to the Left. He stood up to them and fought back. More importantly, he took the fight to them.
The people who disrupted this production of Julius Caesar weren’t throwing bricks, bottles, feces or bike locks at anyone.
They didn’t pepper-spray theater-goers while smashing them on the head with a flag pole.
This idiotic desire to equate their actions with those of the violent and feral Left is disingenuous at best.
All they did was stand up against this prurient display of gratuitous violence against a sitting President.
They did exactly as William F. Buckley once put it. They stood athwart history and yelled “STOP!”
Stop fomenting violence and the mindless need for blood vengeance.
Stop dehumanizing those with whom you disagree.
Will everyone who takes up the words of Andrew Breitbart act in the same manner?
Of course not.
But to dismiss or berate those who bravely stand up against the normalization of violence isn’t just cowardly.
It is living in denial.
The Left doesn’t want to defeat us at the ballot box.
They want destroy us. They want this nation as founded obliterated.
And they will not stop. They will never stop — unless we stand up and stop them.
This is the Second American Revolution.
Only this time we are defending the ideals on which this nation was founded. And those who seek to defeat us will stop at nothing to destroy us.
I applaud anyone who stands up and takes the fight to them.
But just as it happened in the first American Revolution, there are some who are content to sit back and do nothing.
Instead of taking a stand for Liberty and the Civil Rights of all Americans, they prefer to criticize and vilify those who choose to fight back – quibbling over their methods as if life is nothing but a National Review Cruise.
Sure, they’ll bemoan both the rhetoric and the violence of the Left.
But they won’t do a thing to stop it.
Instead they’re content being the ones “lying prone” at the feet of those who wish to destroy us.
