So before he is even sworn in as the new John McCain/Jeff Flake/Bob Corker-style Republican in the Senate, Mitt Romney decided to write a sanctimonious opinion piece in the Washington Post attacking President Trump.
And nobody is the least bit surprised.
We all knew Mitt Romney would use his election to the Senate as an opportunity to out-RINO every RINO who came before him.
Of course most of us figured he’d wait until after he was sworn in.
But not Mitt!
Nope. He couldn’t wait to unzip his fly and piss all over the man who managed to do the one thing Mitt couldn’t do – get elected.
But if Romney thought this was a good idea, he was sorely mistaken.
Sure, the usual suspects will lap up Romney’s Trump attacks like the lapdogs they are.
I’m sure even as I write this, Jeff Flake has locked himself in his bathroom with his pants around his ankles and a copy of Romney’s column clutched in his sweaty free hand.
These guys never learn.
If you decide to take aim at President Trump to ingratiate yourself with the much-hated news media, the only thing you’ll succeed in doing is uniting Republicans behind Trump.
I mean, if your own niece calls you out for being an utter prat, you know you blew it.
This is the same tactic Jeb Bush tried on Trump during the primary.
And how did that work out for him, Mitt?
I read through this bizarre op-ed again this morning. To fire a shot across the bow of the president as you just arrive in D.C., and to do so unprompted, reeks of a man who has little interest getting things done for his state. He’s got some other angle. https://t.co/Rg0hK7XPgT— Jesse Kelly (@JesseKellyDC) January 2, 2019
Maybe he’s gearing up for another presidential run. Maybe he just wants to be welcomed with open media arms (which he now will be).— Jesse Kelly (@JesseKellyDC) January 2, 2019
The main axe to grind with Trump appears to be pulling ourselves out of foreign entanglements. I will always find the rabid chickenhawks to be a bizarre breed.— Jesse Kelly (@JesseKellyDC) January 2, 2019
One thing I do know is Romney will be praised for a week for this op-ed. He’ll be on all the Sunday talk shows as they discover their new favorite Republican who just wants to trash Trump. Bad start for Mitt. Hope he improves. I’m not hopeful. That’s all.— Jesse Kelly (@JesseKellyDC) January 2, 2019
The fact is, I don’t think any of us expected any different from Mitt Romney.
As Sundance put it over at The Conservative Treehouse, “Romney is a small, foul, bitter, jealous man.”
Yes. He is.
And the only people who will embrace him for this bit of sanctimonious crap are the very same people who just six years ago were attacking him as an out of touch elitist.
Is that what Mitt Romney means by “good character” – tossing mud at the President in order to suck up to the people who not only hate Trump but also hate Mitt?
Mitt's attack on Trump is really an attack on us.— Kurt Schlichter (@KurtSchlichter) January 2, 2019
Like Bush, Mitt chose the establishment that despised and humiliated him over the people who defended and voted for him.
He chose his caste over those who backed him.
Loyalty is part of character too, Mitt.
You have none.🛳🛳
So screw Mitt Romney.
Screw him to the wall.
