The other day, the Academy Awards announced that comedian Kevin Hart would be the host of thisyear’s Oscars.
But by midnight last night, he was out.
Because a few humorless, easily-offended prats scoured his social media and discovered that this comedian made jokes almost a decade ago that are now deemed unacceptable.
After seeing this @benfraserlee tweet, I did a search for every time Kevin Hart tweeted "fag," "homo," or "gay." It was…a lot. And he seems to have basically stopped tweeting those words after 2011 — i.e. the year his first stand-up movie became a hit. https://t.co/P8nTOilFgx pic.twitter.com/6uzPhnvt4F— Adam B. I hope this guy never watches an old Richard Pryor routine.
Forget all those noble, heroic movies about Hollywood fighting the blacklist. As I’ve said before, Hollywood – and the Left in general – really don’t have a problem with blacklists so long as they’re the ones making them.
And the target of this new, woke Hollywood blacklist are comedians.
If a decade ago, you joked about someone looking gay or used the word “fag,” you will never work again.
You will be blacklisted.
And today, it isn’t the ones who are blacklisted that are the heroic, noble ones.
Not at all. Today, the blacklisters are.
Oh give me a friggin’ break. He’s a comedian!
You didn’t find a cure for cancer. You didn’t stop a gunman who shot up a school.
All you did was put yet another comedian on the new Hollywood blacklist.
Because your feelings were hurt.
Get over yourself.
As @MarkHarrisNYC notes here, this didn't happen because the trolls were fed, or the haters hated. It happened because Hart was held accountable for harmful things he's said publicly and professionally. That should happen more, not less.https://t.co/Oo3qKmg0Wh— Adam B. More blacklists!!! What a grand idea, you sanctimonious pearl-clutcher.
The irony here is that this Mark Harris wrote a piece decrying Disney for firing director James Gunn after Mike Cernovich called attention to tweets in which Gunn made some inappropriate jokes about sex with children.
In his July 2018 column Disney Should Know the Difference Between James Gunn and Roseanne, Harris wrote:
There are many boxes to unpack here, and the smallest, least interesting one is labeled “Find a better use for your time and creative energy than making jokes about sex with children.” That doesn’t need to be discussed because, one’s absolute right to make those jokes aside, pretty much everyone agrees that it’s bad, including Gunn, who tweeted his regrets about them… [Emphasis Dianny’s]
So, James Gunn has an absolute right to make those jokes, but Kevin Hart deserves to be blacklisted over his jokes.
James Gunn should be forgiven because he apologized. But Kevin Hart’s previous apology is worthless.
Harris’ point in this stupid column is Roseanne should have been fired because her tweet was from the present day. But Gunn shouldn’t have been fired because those tweets were super old.
Yet, he is glad that Kevin Hart got booted from his Oscar host gig over tweets that were super old.
Of course Harris doesn’t think he’s being a hypocrite.
Because, even as he points out in that column, there’s a difference between telling icky jokes about pedophilia and telling jokes about the Left’s protected Victims:
We live in an era in which any insistence that two things with surface similarities are in fact different is met with instant, ill-informed charges of hypocrisy. But a joke — even a thousand creepy jokes that you wouldn’t tell at a dinner table, in a locker room, or anywhere else — is not the same thing as the public stereotyping or vilification of groups that are already widely targeted with discrimination and hatred. [Emphasis Dianny’s]
Why would anyone want this humorless, sanctimonious prat deciding what can and cannot be fodder for comedians?
See, blacklisting is a-okay for these people provided they are the ones deciding who gets blacklisted.
There are acceptable inappropriate jokes (ie: sex with children) and then there are completely unacceptable inappropriate jokes (ie: calling someone gay).
And if you make jokes about gays, it is not just right to blacklist you – it is their moral obligation to do so.
Of course what is acceptable today might not be acceptable ten years from now. And all the people who marched in lock-step with the present-day acceptability might find themselves on the receiving end of the next blacklisting mob.
That’s the problem with thinking your right to police the free speech of others trumps their right to say whatever the hell they want to say.
It used to be “I might not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”
But today that’s changed to “I don’t agree with what you said a decade ago. So I’m going to do everything humanly possible to shut you up. Then I’m going to take a victory lap and act as if I’ve done something virtuous and good.”
Of course, they’ve shortened it to this: “Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences of your speech.”
How stupid do you have to be to think this is a logical point?
In a nutshell, that argument can be described like this:
No Freedom of Speech: We can punish you for what you say.
Freedom of Speech: You can say what you want, but we can punish you for what you say.
Does that make sense to any thinking person?
Any old how.
Comedy has always been about poking fun of ourselves and our cultural norms, mores, hang-ups and traditions.
When you blacklist comedians for doing that, what’s the point of having comedy?
Think about this. The one person allowed to poke fun of the king and still keep his head was the court jester.
Nobody else was allowed to mock the king.
We’re talking about a guy who believed he had a divine right to rule the people. That’s some serious self-importance right there. But even he could take a joke from a comedian.
But not these sanctimonious Speech Police.
Apparently they have a divine right not to be offended. Ever.
And even if the offense was committed a decade ago – and you already apologized for it –you will still be blacklisted.
Hell, even the Inquisition would spare your life if you recanted your heresy.
But for the Left, once a heretic, always a heretic.
Hart turning down the hosting gig and offering yet another mea culpa won’t make a damn bit of difference to these people.
The Offended don’t forgive and they don’t forget.
And bowing to them never works out the way the blacklisted think it will.
