Things took an odd turn yesterday evening in Chicago when CPD released the two suspects in the alleged attack of actor/singer Jussie Smollett.
From Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi:
Case Update: Due to new evidence as a result of today’s interrogations, the individuals questioned by police in the Empire case have now been released without charging and detectives have additional investigative work to complete. pic.twitter.com/Hswn1Qjgcy— Anthony Guglielmi (@AJGuglielmi) February 16, 2019
From ABC7 in Chicago:
The men have been confirmed to be the men seen on surveillance images of the scene of the alleged incident. Chicago Police tell ABC News the reason the men were on the scene is now central to the investigation.
“Yes, they are confirmed to be the men on scene by surveillance video,” Chicago Police said. “The reason why they were there is now central to the investigation and we can’t get into that at this time.”
All-in-all this story has more plot twists than a daytime soap.
I half someone to wake up from a coma and declare that he is Jussie’s long-lost father.
On the heels of this news, it was learned that Smollett has retained the services of a high profile Chicago defense attorney.
With the new developments, I could speculate all day long. As I’m sure you could too.
If their presence at the scene of the alleged attack is central to the investigation, what “evidence as a result of today’s interrogations” led to the two men being released?
Did they offer to cooperate in exchange for no charges being filed?
Or do I just go there because I’ve been binge-watching “Major Crimes” every evening this week?
On the one hand, Smollett retaining a big-name defense attorney makes my spider senses tingle.
Then again, maybe we shouldn’t read too much into Smollett hiring this attorney.
This story has become a full-blown national media circus.
Between Smollett posting about the attack on social media and TMZ running with the story, his alleged attack became the cause du jour for anti-Trump celebrities, politicians and news media outlets desperate to advance the evil, evil “Trump’s America” narrative.
It’s possible this incident became too much for Jussie Smollett to handle on his own.
After all, this past week, Smollett tried to control the runaway train by hiring the public relations firm that worked for Harvey Weinstein.
Who knows? Maybe his PR people urged him to retain an attorney – especially when Chicago police took his two friends into custody.
His hiring a defense attorney doesn’t necessarily mean he’s guilty of something.
At the same time, my gut still says this “two white men brutally attacked Jussie Smollett while shouting ‘this is MAGA country’” narrative is a whole lot of BS.
Especially considering that the only other people on the street the night of this alleged attack were the two black men whom police released last night.
And when you consider the CPD statement that “the reason the men were on the scene is now central to the investigation,” I still have no reason to doubt my gut.
