The latest reincarnation of the Fox show 24 begins tonight after some football game.
Last week my brother asked me if I was going to watch it.
But I’m not.
To me, 24 is Jack Bauer and Chloe O’Brian. Without Jack and Chloe, I have zero interest.
I own all eight seasons of 24, the TV movie that preceded Season 7, and the revamp 24: Live Another Day that was released in 2014.
Every six months or so, I pull them out and watch them from beginning to end. In fact, I started again last week and am almost through watching Season 2.
Sometimes the plots are so ridiculous, I find myself rolling my eyes.
For example, never in the history of television has there ever been a character as prone to stupid plot lines as Kim Bauer.
If there’s a bad decision to be made, count on the writers to have Kim make it. By the middle of Season 2, I think to myself, “Okay, for that stupid move, Kim really deserves to die!”
And season after season, CTU can’t seem to avoid hiring traitors. You’d think they’d figure out how to stop that, but they never do.
No, what I love about 24 aren’t the plots.
What I love is the relationship between Jack and Chloe.
I slog through the first two seasons just to get to the introduction of Chloe O’Brian in Season Three.
The writers really shined in creating that character. And Mary Lynn Rajskub is brilliant in the role.
Jack and Chloe’s relationship develops so perfectly from season to season.
And their final scene together in 24: Live Another Day is the perfect culmination of that complicated relationship.
I’m not saying that this new iteration of 24 won’t be any good.
Hell, maybe it will be.
But for me, 24 will always be Jack Bauer and Chloe O’Brian. They were the reason I loved the show.
And they are the reason I continue to go back to the beginning and watch all 208 episodes over and over again.
