Becoming a Viral Meme was the least of their problems

Becoming a Viral Meme is the least of their problems.

I said yesterday afternoon that it was not going to be a win for the Democrats to give a rebuttal to President Trump’s Oval Office Address.

And, boy, did I call it.

Before they even finished their awkward response, Chuck and Nancy became a viral meme on social media.

And though I despise when people write headlines with the phrase, “Twitter explodes,” there really is no other way to describe it.

The meme makers were working overtime.

Who can blame them?  There was so much fertile ground on which to build meme after meme of Chuck and Nancy’s embarrassing rebuttal.

My favorites:

But you want to know the truth?

Turning into a viral meme was the least of their problems.

Or, maybe I should say, becoming a viral Internet Meme only added insult to a self-inflicted injury.

And the self-inflicted injury was deciding to do this painful response to begin with.

I watched President Trump’s nine-minute address last night.  Though reading off a teleprompter without a live audience is not his thing, there is no doubt in my mind he was persuasive.

And that, in a nutshell, was the whole point of this – to persuade.

The objective wasn’t to just burp out talking points and indulge in ad hominem attacks.

No. The objective was to speak directly to the American people — to make the case and to persuade them.

Trump got that.

Chuck and Nancy did not.

There was no attempt to persuade anyone except the talking heads in the Fake News.

And hey, those guys already agree with Chuck and Nancy.

The American people needed to be persuaded that the Democrats are sincere about wanting to keep America safe.  They need to know that their safety and security actually matter to Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer.

And that’s not what they got.

Instead of speaking directly to the American people, they held a journalist-free press conference where they regurgitated the same tired talking points they’ve been peddling every time they get in spitting distance of a camera.

Unlike President Trump, neither of these two plywood cut-outs managed to display a shred of empathy or compassion.

And while it might have played well in the newsrooms, it was incredibly tone-deaf and completely out of touch with the rest of the country.

In fact, Chuck and Nancy’s embarrassing “rebuttal” managed to make Elizabeth Warren’s clumsy beer-drinking moment look genuine and sincere by comparison.

And that’s it in a nutshell.

Last night was about taking your case to the American people.

And without a doubt, Chuck and Nancy failed miserably.

For all the twaddle about how the Democrats really, really care about the American people and Trump is just a big, fat meanie-meanie-jelly-beanie, when the cameras were on, it was Nancy and Chuck who looked like cold, wooden, uncaring people while Trump was the compassionate one.

This is exactly why I hoped every network would run Chuck and Nancy’s response.

The American people need to see for themselves who really has their backs and who doesn’t.

And after last night, it was crystal-freaking clear.
