Forget Queen Elizabeth, it’s my Mom’s birthday!

Forget Queen Elizabeth, it’s my Mom’s birthday!

Lots of folks are wishing Queen Elizabeth II a happy birthday today.  And I get it.  She turns 94 today, and she is a queen after all.  But Queen Elizabeth turning 94 isn’t nearly as exciting to me as my Mom turning 88.

When I was younger, I thought it was cool that my Mom shared her birthday with Queen Elizabeth II.  Then again, I got quite a kick out of sharing my birthday with Peter Frampton.

Mom will always trump the Queen as far as I’m concerned.

Don’t get me wrong.  I have nothing against Queen Elizabeth. But between the two of them, my Mom is just, well, more important.

And, as I do every year on April 21st, I want to take a moment here at to honor my awesome Mom and wish her a happy birthday.

This morning when I was getting dressed, I happened to look over at the stuffed Henry Dog my parents gave me for my ninth birthday.  I still have it.  He sits in my bedroom staring at me – though only from one eye (I lost the other one years ago).

When they first gave me Henry, my Mom, who is a wizard with the Singer, sewed him a little outfit – denim pants and a red, button-down shirt.  And 48 years later, Henry is still wearing the outfit my Mom made for him.

Queen Elizabeth never sewed my stuffed Henry Dog an outfit.

Mom is’s biggest fan.  Now, she has never in her life used a computer, and has no interest in changing that. So since she won’t use my Dad’s laptop to go online, I print each of my posts and give them to her once a week or so.  Then Mom sits down in her favorite chair with a cup of coffee and a stack of Patriot Retort posts and starts reading.

Sometimes she doesn’t get some of my pop culture references.  For instance, the Gretchen Whitmer as Caitlyn Jenner post might go over her head. But it doesn’t matter.  She voraciously reads each and every one.

I bet Queen Elizabeth never read a single thing I’ve written.

Any old how.

Happy birthday Mom.

I love you like crazy.

And today, you are the Queen.

Love every single one of your columns.. always insightful and very very funny. I read political commentary for a hour+ everyday but yours is always the first one read. This simple message was a message to everyone’s mom, and brought back memories, and a tear, of my recently passed away 92 year old mom. I wish I’d told her more often how much she meant to my life.
All I can say is thank you.

Happy Birthday to your Mom — as my Mom used to tell me, “Dance like no one is watching!”

    Ecclesiastes 12:7
And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

    Revelation 21:4
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

Our love to you dear lady.

Dear me! She’s this side of the grass, mate. Let’s not mourn my very alive mother on her birthday. Wow. Bad timing.
