Well, there’s one more thing to put in the Win Column, my friends.
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner may be coming to an end.
The press is in a sticky situation.
See, they love putting on fancy clothes and rubbing elbows with Hollywood celebrities rooked into attending this self-indulgent soiree.
But they just can’t stomach the idea of having their party crashed by the current President of the United States.
Obama was the perfect President for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Like the press, he was a celebrity whore and a snob.
And after eight years of the press slobbering and squealing over Obama at this circle-jerk, the thought of breaking bread with Donald Trump is just too much for them to take.
They don’t want boorish Trump spoiling their hoity-toity event.
Besides, with Obama, they knew he would deliver a stand-up routine that attacked and insulted all the people the press despises.
But President Trump isn’t likely to do that, is he?
My guess is, he’d make the press the butt of his jokes.
And it’s not like they can refuse to invite the President. After all, it is the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
So instead, they’re taking their gowns, their tuxedos and their marbles and going home in a snit.
What ever will C-SPAN do without that hour of programming?
Well, if I had to guess, I’d say they’ll put together a segment called “Obama’s greatest jokes from the White House Correspondents’ Dinners” and air that in its place.
The truth is, the Enslaved Press not only wants to be a part of the Washington power structure; they want to be part of the celebrity culture.
They want to be seen hobnobbing with the powerful and famous.
Trump’s victory tossed them out into the cold.
In fact, I think that is why they are so determined to destroy him.
He isn’t a threat to “democracy” or “freedom.”
They want to destroy him because he has threatened their place among the elites.
The modern-day Enslaved Press does not see its role as reporting news.
Instead, they see themselves as newsworthy. They want to be a part of the “movers and shakers.”
As columnist Michael Wolff told CNN hack Brian Stelter yesterday, “It’s not a good look to repeatedly and self-righteously defend your own self-interest. The media should not be the story. Every week, in this religious sense, you make it the story. We are not the story!”
[See the whole segment at Newsbusters. Trust me, it’s worth it.]
And this is why they have turned this White House Correspondents’ Dinner into their own self-congratulatory mini-Academy Awards.
The last thing they want is to have to include the man who has bitch-slapped them and made fools of them for the last two years.
But if Trump being President puts an end to this pointless, self-indulgent display, that definitely belongs in the Win Column.
