If Hollywood protects Affleck, then they’re lying about changing their culture

Affleck

Virtually every statement released by Hollywood bigwigs about Harvey Weinstein has included some virtue-signaling nod to the “courage” of those women who came forward. They wax profoundly about protecting their female colleagues and ensuring this never happens again.

And that includes actor/producer/director Ben Affleck.

In his statement on Monday, Affleck said, among other things:

This is completely unacceptable, and I find myself asking what I can do to make sure this doesn’t happen to others. We need to do better at protecting our sisters, friends, co-workers and daughters. We must support those who come forward, condemn this type of behavior when we see it and help ensure there are more women in positions of power.

Noble words, aren’t they?

But it turns out Affleck has his own problems when it comes to keeping his gropey hands to himself.

The problem is — as John Nolte points out at Breitbart — the same outlets that are reveling in Weinstein’s fall are protecting Affleck.

And this is not a good sign.

But it also backs up what I said in the previous post.

This story may begin with Harvey Weinstein, but it will not end with him.

And trust me, Hollywood desperately wants him to be the sacrificial lamb — a burnt offering on the altar of public outrage, leaving the rest of them untouched.

If they protect Affleck then that means all those platitudes about “changing the culture, “protecting women,” and “standing with victims of sexual abuse” were lies.

As Nolte says in his piece at Breitbart:

Harvey Weinstein is no longer useful to anyone, so scores are being settled. If he was still useful, his predations would be allowed to continue unchallenged.

Moreover, outlets like Deadline, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter will not make any advertising money from Weinstein. Oscar season is Black Friday to these outlets. Weinstein no longer fills these coffers.

The same is not true for Affleck.

Not only is two-time Oscar-winner Affleck one of the hottest directors around, he is Hollywood’s freakin’ BATMAN — he is the tentpole holding up a tentpole, the Warner Brothers’ Justice League franchise, and what is probably a $250 million to $300 million investment that will hit thousands of screens in less than five weeks.

The powers that be in Hollywood have no interest in changing their culture.

They never did.

Money is all that matters.

That’s why they let Weinstein’s behavior go unchecked for more than twenty years.

And Nolte’s right. It’s exactly why they’ll shield Affleck or any other powerful person in Hollywood who still brings in the cash.

Nobody wants to slay the golden goose — no matter how much of a perv that goose is.

As I said yesterday about the Obamas, moral outrage is easy when you don’t have to put your money where your mouth is.

But it’s also phony.

Hollywood knows just how damning the revelations about Weinstein are. But the culture of abuse does not begin and end with Harvey Weinstein.

And trust me. Hollywood does not want anyone to know just how pervasive this perverse culture is.

So long as the abusers are bringing in cold, hard cash, Hollywood will continue protecting them.

That includes Ben Affleck and heaven only knows how many others.
