No Lupus flare will stop me from wishing Mom a happy birthday

No Lupus flare will stop me from wishing Mom a happy birthday

You probably noticed my absence yesterday. Yeah. It’s a monster Lupus flare. Yesterday I was up by six and back in bed by eight. Not good. This is the kind of Lupus flare that so beats the snot out of me I end up with a raging fever from the battle.

But today is my Mom’s birthday. And even a monster Lupus flare won’t get in the way of wishing my Mom a very happy birthday.

It’s become an annual tradition here at to take some time on April 21 to honor my Mom. She is the most important person in my life, and no stupid Lupus flare will interfere with celebrating her day.

A few years ago, my Aunt Joy mailed me a package filled with old letters, cards and pictures she thought I might like. Those two pictures above were included in what she sent.

My father met my Mom when he was stationed in Germany in the 1950s. After he got permission from my grandfather (he was under 21 and the army required parental consent to wed), they were married on January 8, 1957.

The picture on the left is one my Mom sent in a letter to her new sister-in-law, my Aunt Joy. Joy had sent my Mom a picture of herself holding a cat. And in response, my Mom sent that picture. On the back, Mom wrote: “This is a nice pet isn’t it?”

My Mom turns 89 today.

It’s hard to wrap my mind around that. To me, Mom never ages. To me, she is the same today as she was back in 1979 when my parents took me to see ABBA in concert in Montreal. When they ended the concert without doing “Waterloo,” my Mom stood up and started chanting “Waterloo! Waterloo!”

Yeah, I was sixteen and mortified. But now when I think of that, I always chuckle to myself.

Oh, and ABBA did do “Waterloo” during the encore.

My Mom doesn’t do computers, like at all. So at least once a week, I print up the posts from for her to read. Some of the cultural references might fly clear over her head, but she still reads every single one of them.

After USA Today “fact-checked” my Jill Biden dressed like Madonna image, I got a few emails from angry USA Today readers. “Your mother must be ashamed of you” said one irate scribe. Oh, honey. If you only knew that Mom is my biggest fan.

When I’m hit with a monster Lupus flare, nobody gets more frustrated than my Mom. But mostly because it means she has fewer posts from to read.

Happy Birthday, Mom!

I love you. And I am so proud to be your daughter.

Your mom sounds delightful! My own mom didn’t have one maternal bone in her body, as she was a complete narcissist. How lovely to read about a healthy mom-daughter relationship! That’s what I strive for with my daughters. Thanks for sharing a little of your mom with us. Wishing her many more happy birthdays with you!

Happy Birthday to a mom who had a sense of humor (referring to her pet “cat”).

    Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag!

Anecdote: Over 40 years ago, I lived in a small village in Germany (Türkismühle in the Saar). My neighbor was having a birthday and my wife and I sang “Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag” to the tune of the Birthday Song. My neighbor Erika, her husband, and all the party guests (none of whom knew English) scratched their heads and looked puzzled. Suddenly, one them had the “ah ha” moment and quickly let them all know that we were singing the Birthday Song. Then they demonstrated how Germans sing the Birthday Song, “Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear Erika, Happy Birthday to you!” Yep, the only English they knew was the Birthday Song…boy, did we feel silly…and they all laughed!

Also, I figured you were under the weather. I was gonna give you two days before I emailed you.

Thanks Meli. Yeah this flare is the worst one in over a year. I’d kill for a couple Percocet right about now. But my rheumatologist is anti-narcotics when it come to Lupus-related pain. I agree with her reasons, but still. At a time like this, a girl can dream.

sorry to hear about your flare up. God speed for a recovery. My wife who passed away almost 3 years ago developed a form of Lupus during the birth of our daughter. They actually did not know at the time what to label it. they called it mixed connective tissue disease. My daughter is fine. Happy birthday to your mom. Thank you for your great posts.

Happy Birthday Dianny’s Mom & many, many more! with your daughter!

I, too, have Lupus, but fortunately it’s mild and seems to be responding well to Hydroxychloroquine alone, since my doc just tapered me off the Prednisone.

My mom had her 95th birthday Monday, the same day they shut down her nursing home AGAIN due to one employee Covid infection. Fortunately we busted her out of the the previous Saturday for a party at my house. Good timing!
