Today Rand Paul ended his run for the White House, but honestly, I hope he tries again in the future. Though there are positions Rand holds with which I disagree, I believe he is a solid Constitutional conservative and a strong voice for Liberty. I would have happily voted for Rand Paul in the primaries if he remained the only Constitutional conservative on the ballot, and would have been proud to vote for him in November.
I confess it bugs me a little that Rick Santorum remains in the race while Rand Paul has dropped out. But I understand why Rand did it. He is also up for reelection in the Senate and wisely chose to focus on that campaign than continue in a race where he failed to gain more than 2% support in the polls. Though he did better than expected in Iowa — coming in fifth — it was a distant fifth place and not nearly good enough to justify remaining in the race.
The true measure of a man is knowing when it is time to walk away. And I respect Rand Paul’s decision.
I only wish that some of the other Republican candidates would follow his lead, man up and walk away.
Here is Rand Paul’s statement:
It’s been an incredible honor to run a principled campaign for the White House. Today, I will end where I began, ready and willing to fight for the cause of Liberty.
Across the country thousands upon thousands of young people flocked to our message of limited government, privacy, criminal justice reform and a reasonable foreign policy. Brushfires of Liberty were ignited, and those will carry on, as will I.
Although, today I will suspend my campaign for President, the fight is far from over. I will continue to carry the torch for Liberty in the United States Senate and I look forward to earning the privilege to represent the people of Kentucky for another term.
News just came out that Rick Santorum will also be dropping out and when he makes it official he will endorse someone who remains in the race. Not sure who that will be. But we’ll find out soon, I’m sure.
