Profile in Cowardice

It’s a good thing Kamala Harris didn’t go the Kirsten Gillibrand route and choose “Brave” as her campaign slogan.  Because at the end of the day, the Kamala Harris for the People campaign was a profile in cowardice.

In the wee hours of the night last night, I got to thinking about her graceless exit from the 2020 race. And it suddenly occurred to me that Kamala took the coward’s way out.

But of course she did.

As I mentioned the other day, I went back and read every single post I wrote about Kamala Harris since she first entered the Senate.  And one recurring theme in a lot of them was political calculation.

Every Senate speech, every confirmation hearing, every tweet – everything Kamala did was a calculated effort to bolster her public profile in preparation for a run in 2020.  Hell, even her run for the Senate was all about preparing herself for a 2020 run.

It isn’t as if she was good at hiding her calculation. I mean, way back in June of 2017, I saw exactly what Kamala Harris was — a Resume-Packing Future Presidential Candidate.

With that in mind, ask yourself one question.

If running for President was Kamala’s goal all along, why drop out of the race before a single primary?

Cowardice.  That’s why.

Cowardice and calculation.

Kamala Harris wanted to leave the 2020 race while still maintaining the impression that she is a popular, up-and-coming, rising star of the Democrat Party.  Trust me.  Kamala fully intends to run for the White House again in 2024.

For crying out loud, it’s the only damn reason she ran for the Senate to begin with. She’s not going to give up on her dream.

But the last thing Kamala Harris wants right now is to face primary voters only to lose badly.

When you’re a resume-packer, you do not want your resume sullied by something like humiliating defeat.

Better to drop out now and maintain the illusion that you’re a star with an impressive resume than have the voters screw that up for you.

And for someone who seeks elected national office, that kind of calculation is pure political cowardice.

But that’s Kamala Harris.

She might be a resume-packer, but she’s a cowardly resume-packer.

Any old how.

This morning, I whipped together that ‘Shop image of Kamala as the Cowardly Lion in preparation for this post. Then I happened over to Front Page Magazine where I saw Daniel Greenfield’s latest column, “That Girl Who Wasted Millions and Dropped Out Before a Primary Was Me.”

And it was as if he read my mind.

Greenfield’s post-mortem of the failure of Kamala’s campaign is spot-on and a must read.

And he too saw that cowardice is at the very heart of Kamala’s motivation for dropping out now.

After blowing through tens of millions of dollars, Kamala Harris dropped out before facing a single primary so as to preserve the illusion of her electability. A humiliating finish in Iowa or, worse New Hampshire, would have destroyed her potential in any future national election. And so Kamala Harris for the People shed its people, after wasting its campaign funds, to protect Kamala’s future ambitions.

Boy, that is so on-the-nose.

Moving on.

The cowardly act of political calculation shows why Kamala will never be in the White House.

Presidents have to be willing to gamble everything. Kamala wasn’t Trump or Obama. She was Jeb Bush and Hillary Clinton. Just as in her Willie Brown days, she wanted a sure thing and an easy ride.

Dropping out now allows Kamala to bray about how she will continue to fight “for the people.”

But the problem is, she’s afraid of the fight.  She’s afraid to put her ass on the line and risk defeat.

And while she might bill herself as a fearless fighter for Justice, at the end of the day, it wasn’t fearlessness that Kamala Harris displayed.

It was cowardice.

She claimed her candidacy was “for the People.” But in reality she was too afraid to face the people when the people finally have a chance to show Kamala whether or not they were with her.

For Kamala Harris, self-preservation matters far more than selfless service “for the People.”

And I think Greenfield is right.  This kind of craven calculation might work well in a one-party state like California.  But in the country as a whole, Americans don’t respond well to political opportunism.  So even if Kamala’s cowardice affords her a second bite at the Presidential the apple, she will never have the courage to fight all the way to the White House.

Even if she runs in 2024, she’s not going to be the nominee. Nobody likes her.

She may be laboring under the misapprehension that by getting out now she’ll have a good chance of making the eventual nominee’s short list for VP.

I think that is part of it, yes.

But generally you choose a VP who rounds out the ticket — someone who can bring in voters the nominee may have trouble winning over. Kamala has no voters she can claim ownership of. It isn’t as if the Democrats might lose California unless they have a California politician on the ticket. They could nominate a pile of dog crap and still win California. So Kamala would bring absolutely nothing to the ticket.

Creepy Uncle Joe has already chimed in saying she could be president, vice president or a Supreme Court Justice!

Gone due to the racism and sexism of Democrat voters.
Next it will be their homophobia when Pete Buttigieg bows out.
No wait, that would be a curtsy ….
