Shelter in place

Yesterday evening my neighborhood — which includes Syracuse University — was swarmed with police including helicopters flying overhead for hours. Several miles away, one teenager was shot and wounded, and another shot dead. Detectives got to the scene very quickly because that neighborhood has had a spate of shootings over the last few months, so police presence has been beefed up. The shooter(s) fled by car and headed toward my neck of the woods with police chasing after them. They bailed out of their vehicle about three blocks from my house and opened fire on the police before fleeing into a very large cemetery next to SU.

Residents and SU students were ordered to shelter in place as the manhunt began.

Odd, isn’t it?

New York State has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country. In fact, the NY SAFE law was forced on us ostensibly to do something about “gun violence.” And yet, here we all were, sheltering in place while police combed the area for the gunmen.

Of course, my shelter includes guns (and a pit bull), so I was safe. But SU is a gun-free zone. Even students who possess a valid concealed carry permit are prohibited from bringing a gun on campus. So the students weren’t so much sheltering in place as they were sitting ducks. But there you go.

Gun control extremists just cannot seem to wrap their minds around the fact that criminals do not give a shit about laws. That’s what makes them criminals.

I hate to be Captain Obvious, but NY SAFE isn’t making the residents of my neighborhood remotely SAFE. And it isn’t doing a damn thing to prevent the criminals from being armed.

The truth is, for me, sheltering in place is the safest place. Because I can’t carry my guns outside of my house. Having a carry permit in this county is nearly impossible. You can only get a concealed carry permit if “cause exists.” And apparently, “Criminals in my neighborhood shoot at the police” is not “cause.”

This past winter, I watched three teenage boys attempt to break into my neighbor’s house. I grabbed my cell phone, took their picture, then called the police. They were apprehended about two blocks away. When the two officers were at my house taking my statement, we got to talking about guns and the NY SAFE Law. I mentioned that I was gun owner and the officer in charge said, “Good. Single woman living alone? You should be.” He also praised my decision to adopt a pit bull. “Best dog to have for home defense,” he told me.

It used to be considered common sense that, as human beings, we have the right to protect ourselves. Forget human beings. All living creatures are designed with a fight or flight instinct. But Leftists want us to relinquish what is innate in our humanity. They don’t believe you and I have any business defending ourselves.

No surprises there. They also don’t believe we should be feeding ourselves, paying our own bills, investing in our future, or taking care of our health and well-being.

They’re trying to beat the human nature clean out of us.

For the Left, expecting Americans to shelter in place unarmed and defenseless is Utopia.

For me, it’s downright bat-shit crazy.

Which is why my shelter happens to be heavily-armed.

Seems to me the more gun control laws that we have the more dangerous the world around us becomes. I grew up in the 50’s and you could order a gun from the Sears & Roebuck mail order catalog and have it delivered right to your home without all rules and paperwork we have now. Every household had a few guns because it was hard to shoot a wild rabbit, squirrel, coon or deer with a sling shot. Nobody locked the doors on their house because no one was going to come in uninvited. They would most likely get dead. The keys to the car was left in the switch so they wouldn’t get lost. The Constitution guaranteed
everyone the right to be armed. But over the years under the pretense of making us all safer our government decided to put all these regulations in place and make us pay for the right to be armed. And like everything else the government gets it’s claws in it didn’t do anything but make a small problem a larger problem. So as always their solution is to impose more rules and regulations.

Right you are! It was the same where I grew up. And then Johnson foisted the “Great Society” on us. Liberals drooled at the power handed to them and blacks got used to having everything given to them for “free.” That is why we are where we are today in this country.

Picture a proud nation of strong individuals where, upon being notified that miscreants are on the loose in the vicinity, people come out onto their porches and into their yards with shotguns and cell phones in hand. The scum would be scurrying from shadow to shadow, hunted like the rabid animals that they are.
