One of the most damaging moments from the first round of Democrat debates was when the moderators asked for a show of hands on a few positions.
Like the “Show of hands: Will your healthcare plan cover illegal aliens?”
Or “Show of hands: Will your Medicare for All plan abolish private health insurance?”
For voters, the show of hands questions were extremely enlightening (operative word here: extreme). It allowed voters to see, in one fell swoop, just where these candidates stood on some pretty unpopular issues.
And, see. That right there is the problem.
But don’t worry, folks! CNN is on the case!
CNN announces rules for Detroit debate later this month. There will be no "show of hands" questions— Toluse Olorunnipa (@ToluseO) July 9, 2019
Yes. Heaven forbid the American people actually find out just how extreme these candidates are.
There is no doubt the show of hands questions were the most revealing and horrifying moments of the first round of debates.
The vast majority of Americans, for example, do not want to foot the bill to provide illegal aliens health insurance. Certainly not when, by a show of hands, all the Democrat candidates went all in on depriving us of our own private health insurance coverage.
Besides, the optics were terrifically awful for the DNC. In fact, the Republicans “pounced” on those show of hands images. Mostly, as I said, because most Americans strongly object to the very issues these Democrats raised their hands to support.
And the memes! Don’t forget the embarrassing memes!
But debates aren’t about informing voters of the candidates’ positions, silly rabbit!
The debates are to raise the profiles of the candidates CNN wants to stay in the race.
Clearly the DNC realized that the show of hands questions forced these extreme candidates with unpopular positions to, in one visual, say the quiet parts out loud.
So CNN, dutiful media arm of the DNC that it is, will see to it that Democrats are not put in the awkward position of admitting just how far out of the mainstream they really are.
But I’m guessing none of this comes as a surprise to any of you.
It sure as hell doesn’t surprise me.
