A squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner
My brother and I have been exchanging texts about our favorite Christmas movie.
Since we were kids, both of us faithfully watch the 1951 version of “A Christmas Carol” starring Alastair Sim as Scrooge every Christmastime.
If you are a fan of any version of “A Christmas Carol,” you probably recognize the title of this post as it is how Scrooge is described.
I always found it fascinating that among that description, the one word not mentioned is “greedy.”
Fascinating, but not surprising.
Covetous is a much more powerful word than greedy.
Because the man who covets will do anything to get what he wants.
In a lot of ways the Left is a haven for covetous old sinners – always counting other people’s money, always “squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping and clutching” for what others have.
A couple years ago, I wrote a column about that covetous old sinner Barack Obama aptly titled “He Covets.”
And I cite a scene from my other favorite movie “The Silence of the Lambs.”
I’ve read the case files. Have you? Everything you
need to find him is there in those pages.
Clarice
Then tell me how.
Lecter
First principles, Clarice. Simplicity. Read Marcus
Aurelius. Of each particular thing, ask what is it in
itself? What is its nature? What does he do, this
man you seek?
Clarice
He kills women.
Lecter
No. That is incidental. What is the first and
principle thing he does? What needs does he serve by
killing?
Clarice
Anger. Social acceptance. Sexual frustrations.
Lecter
No. He covets. That is his nature. And how do we
begin to covet, Clarice? Do we seek out things to
covet? Make an effort to answer now.
Clarice
No. We just…
Lecter
No, we begin by coveting what we see every day.
Don’t you feel eyes moving over your body, Clarice?
And don’t your eyes seek out the things you want?
But Barack Obama isn’t the only covetous old sinner on the Left.
As I mentioned in my earlier post, Congressman Ted Lieu is a prime example of that.
GOP underestimates how people feel when they know others got a better deal. If Sally gets a tax cut of $380 but others get $200,000, she will be upset. And wait until Joe finds out he is getting a tax increase for residing in CA. That's why tax bill is so unpopular: human nature. https://t.co/uPr9aWBAsn

The Democrats never appeal to our better nature, do they?
No, they seek to bring out the covetous old sinner in all of us.
Here is what I wrote about Barack Obama in “He Covets:”
What is the first thing he does? What needs does he serve by governing in this manner?
He covets.
Think of this drive to act out of “fairness.”
It isn’t “fairness” that motivates him, but envy.
Envy.
He covets.
He covets a life of luxury, but, like most people who are devoured by envy, never considers striving to earn this life.
No, he covets this life.
And so he takes it.
He looks at Americans who live in freedom and prosperity and, rather than being filled with a sense of pride that America is a place where the opportunity to succeed and prosper exists, he covets what others have achieved.
And he preys on the envy and covetousness of others.
They all do.
For the Left, the only way to win is stir up envy and resentment among the people.
They covet. And they want everyone else to be as covetous as they.
I went on:
There is a reason that Thou Shalt not Covet is one of the Ten Commandments.
A covetous nature is a nature unmoored from morality.
It isn’t simply envy or jealously.
It is an all-consuming desire. One that must be sated.
To covet requires action. The one who covets is making a conscious choice to act on his desire for what others have.
The covetous man will stop at nothing to get what he wants. No laws will stop him. There is no right and wrong, only want.
He becomes deaf and blind to all other things.
The more he covets, the more resentful and angry he becomes at those who have what he wants.
And in this all-consuming anger, the covetous man can justify theft, destruction and even murder.
The covetous man will even destroy the object of his desire in order to ensure that nobody else can obtain it.
The Left would rather destroy our economy than permit companies and people to become wealthy from a Free Market.
They would rather we all be poor and dependent on government than to see some prosper and thrive.
And they covet Liberty. But they also fear it. Because when we live in Liberty, they are unable to take what we have.
But it isn’t just domestically.
America is faced with covetous old sinners outside our borders as well.
Consider how outraged they are that Nikki Haley and President Trump are standing up to the United Nations.
America should not be a Superpower because other countries are not.
And since other countries covet the power and wealth of America, the American Left believes we should willingly divest ourselves of both.
They covet and the encourage others to be as covetous as they are.
This is why they hate President Trump.
He is standing in the way of these squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinners.
And it is exactly why they’ve become so unhinged and insane.
Sadly, I doubt being visited by three spirits will be enough to get these hateful, covetous cretins to change their ways.

Man, you nailed that one, Dianny. And Christmas themed as well. Kudos and Merry Christmas.
Well, Lucifer coveted the throne of God, and they are their father’s children after all.
The 1951 version is my all time favorite Christmas movie.Dickens’ granddaughter or great niece was the costume consultant to ensure authenticity. The difference is that Scrooge finally came to his senses and changed his ways. There is absolutely no hope for the corruptocrats. They have no conscience and no soul.
Excellent piece. And, for the record, while there have been many since the Alistair Sims’ version is the one I think of as ‘classic’. Especially brilliant as he frightens the bejesus out of his housekeeper.
I’m partial to the 1938 version with Reginald Owen as Scrooge — that’s the “classic” one I think of. It also featured Ann Rutherford (“Polly” in the Andy Hardy movie series) as one of the ghosts…she was an early heartthrob for me.
