There’s Defensive and then there’s Joe Biden Defensive

Whelp.  I think now we know why Joe Biden hadn’t said anything about the accusation against him made by Tara Reade.  Holy smokes.  The “Biden will finally answer questions” interview with MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinksi was an unmitigated disaster for Team Biden.  Joe was so damn defensive that he inadvertently added fuel to the fire.

If the objective was to put this allegation to rest, Defensive Joe just managed to do the opposite.

Frankly, I’m surprised Mika asked Joe some pretty good questions.  And maybe Team Biden hadn’t expected that – which might explain why Joe was either caught speechless or got belligerent and defensive.

Mika actually asked Joe to square his position regarding the accusations against Brett Kavanaugh with Tara Reade’s accusation against him. [Spoiler alert: it didn’t square.]

But it was when Mika pressed him on why he won’t get the University of Delaware to release his papers that things went from bad to worse.

Notice what Joe says here.  The archives at the University of Delaware only contain his “public records.”

Public records. Keep that in mind.

When pressed about opening up these public records for review, Defensive Joe digs himself into a disastrous hole.

Wow. That is so full of fodder, one barely knows where to begin.

Notice how he describes these records.  In the first clip he says the University of Delaware wouldn’t have personnel files because it only contains public records.  And in this clip he says they can’t be released because it contains a lot of confidential material.

So which is it?

Are they simply public records?  Or do they include confidential records?

If I had to guess, based on what he says in this clip, I’d say by “confidential,” Joe means, “Damn if this gets out I’m screwed.”

Keep in mind that Joe Biden is on video publicly bragging about withholding aid to Ukraine until they agreed to fire the prosecutor investigating Burisma.  If Joe would make that kind of admission in front of an audience and on camera, imagine the kind of shenanigans Joe’s pulled behind closed doors.

It’s this kind of inadvertent reveal that makes this interview a disaster for the Biden campaign.

Yes, clearly the first instinct to keep Joe silent was the better way to go.

Joe came off agitated, defensive and frustrated.  There’s no doubt he went armed with talking points drummed into his head by his campaign — like the “those records don’t contain personnel records” talking point. You can tell he was fed that because he kept going back to it.

Not only that, Joe tangled himself up in his previous statements about sexual assault and believing women.  His repeated denials essentially fell back on the same thing – an exasperated “Look, this never happened.” Which, by the way, is yet another Biden Campaign talking point.

But worse, not only did Defensive Joe fail to put Tara Reade’s accusation in the rearview mirror, he created a second scandal regarding the documents held at the University of Delaware.

You think people aren’t going to be asking “What’s in those records that Joe is trying to hide?”

The way that Biden was talking about the @UDelaware records, there’s clearly stuff in there that is fatal to his presidential ambitions.

I mean, come on.  When you come out and admit that they have to stay hidden because the contents could be used against you while you’re running for President, you’ve just opened yourself up to a whole lot of trouble.

And it’s doubly bad because Joe made this blunder, not during some under-watched podcast, but during a highly-anticipated interview that was bound to be watched by millions.

While Biden called the allegation of whether he raped a woman "irrelevant," it is relevant. Biden succeeded in putting a spot light on Delaware. This is the type of cringe-worthy examination you see in trials when a smooth witness suddenly becomes alarmed or irate on the stand…

And by admitting he wants to keep those records hidden so they can’t be used as fodder against him, he just guaranteed they will be used as fodder against him.

You think Team Biden is happy right now?  You think they aren’t in a frantic Zoom meeting trying to figure out how to salvage this?  And it’s all their fault.  In the campaign’s attempt to quash the Tara Reade scandal, their unpredictable and defensive candidate just offered up a flaming bag of dog shit that they now have to stamp out.
