Like most of you I watched the mob swarm the Capitol yesterday. And holy crap, was it an absolute disaster.
In the evening I started writing a post about it, but midway through, thought better of it and sent the document to the trash folder.
When something this big unfolds, I hold with the “wait until morning” rule before writing anything.
Two reasons for that:
First, reports are flying like bats and it is often difficult to separate the truth from speculation.
Second, writing out of reactionary emotion might be cathartic, but it isn’t productive.
There was already plenty of reactionary emotion flying around. No need to add to it in the heat of the moment.
So here we are the morning after. I slept on it. Though, not as much as I wanted. I woke up at three this morning already mulling over what I wanted to write.
The upshot of my thinking is simple. When idiots swarm the Capitol, I don’t care if they’re Antifa, BLM, the harpies of the Women’s March, Q-followers, Lin Wood saps or genuine MAGA. They’re all idiots. And their actions are stupid and wildly counter-productive.
If you want to destroy the America First movement, this is how you do it. Swarm the US Capitol and hand the Trump-hating media the perfect “Trump Supporters are Terrorists” narrative gift-wrapped on a silver platter.
Great work, team!
I can hear it now, “But, but, but Dianny! It was a false flag operation! These weren’t real Trump supporters!”
You think that matters?
What world do you live in?
I may want a world where our news media reports the truth in an objective and unbiased way. But that isn’t the world we live in.
Every last moron who smashed his way into the Capitol will be labeled a Trump supporter whether he is or isn’t. You can provide evidence gleaned from facial recognition software showing that Antifa was behind this, and still the media will report “Trump Mob Swarms Capitol.”
Is it likely that Antifa was involved? I’d say there’s a very good probability that’s the case. Antifa always shows up when Trump supporters rally in DC. So the odds that this time they stayed away are slim to none.
But the reality is this swarm wasn’t exclusively Antifa.
This guy in the foreground of this screenshot is one of the people who broke into Nancy Pelosi’s office:
He goes by the name Baked Alaska and he’s one of the tiki torch clowns from Charlottesville.
(Some have claimed the guy in the background is Nick Fuentes, but that has been disputed. Fuentes himself posted photos from yesterday to show it wasn’t him. I don’t point this out because I feel the need to white knight for that asshole; I do it because I want to be truthful and separate speculation from fact. If we had an objective press, you’d all recognize this behavior without me having to explain.)
The Air Force veteran who was shot and killed by a Capitol Hill police officer while she tried to crawl through a broken window was a Trump supporter whose Twitter timeline is filled with retweets of Lin Wood’s insane musings.
So while Antifa might have played a part in the swarm, they weren’t the only idiots there. And rationalizing that it was all Antifa is a pointless and dishonest exercise.
Now some of you might be thinking, “But Dianny! This is nowhere near as bad as the BLM riots this summer! And what about the swarm of idiots who flooded into the Capitol during the Kavanaugh hearing!!!”
Yes, you’re right.
The riots this summer, along with the riots during Trump’s Inauguration, were far more destructive than yesterday. I absolutely agree.
What happened yesterday isn’t a one-off in the least.
Let me give you an example:
This is from the Women’s March during the Kavanaugh Hearings:
“Flood the Capitol.”
And here’s the Women’s March during the Impeachment last year:
Now, here’s the Women’s March yesterday:
“terror in the #Capitol.”
But again, we live in a world where the news media will be as hypocritical as the Women’s March. During the Kavanaugh hearings, the media celebrated the idiots who descended on the Capitol in a swarm. Ditto for their #SwarmTheCapitol during the impeachment trial.
The media cheered on and even gave airtime to the dimwitted harpies who trapped Jeff Flake in that elevator. There were no breathless histrionics about domestic terrorism or “undermining our democracy.”
I could post tons of examples showing that this isn’t the first time people have descended on the Capitol. But it won’t make a damn bit of difference to how this will be reported in the news.
We have to operate in that reality. And in reality these “but what about” arguments will fall on deaf ears. The media will not care, nor will they widely report it. What’s more, too many Americans will simply believe the narrative that the news media (and the politicians) will put out about what happened yesterday.
Why do you think two out of three Democrats still believe Trump conspired with Putin to steal the 2016 election? Why do you think so many Americans still believe that Trump suggested drinking bleach? Or the “Trump called Nazis ‘very fine people’” hoax?
The news media narrative about what happened yesterday has already been chiseled in stone. And years from now, these idiots will be described as “domestic terrorists” “incited by Trump” to “destroy our democracy.”
The same thing goes for pointing out the hypocrisy of politicians and pundits when it comes to what riots are “peaceful” and “necessary” and what riots are “domestic terrorism.”
If we had a news media that prided itself on being objective and truthful, these kinds of arguments would be extremely effective.
But we don’t, so they aren’t.
Now I could write an “I told you so” column about all my warnings to the Left, the media and politicians about normalizing and enabling mob violence. In fact, I could be downright profound on the subject.
I could say that spending four years vilifying and marginalizing normal Americans because of their political beliefs will only radicalize them. This is the very point Jack Buckby makes in his book Monster of Their Own Making. When I reviewed that book in November, some scoffed at the idea that people on the Right could ever become radicalized like people on the Left.
Well, if anything, the swarm descending on the Capitol proved Jack Buckby was right.
Finally, the biggest tactical error yesterday that played right into the media’s hands came from President Trump.
I texted this to my brother yesterday around 5:00 pm:
”It was an enormous tactical error for Trump to both promote then speak at the rally today. Not because the bulk of the rally-goers are to blame for the violence. But because any idiot could have told you violence was going to happen. Now Trump has hitched his wagon to the violent idiots who stormed the Capitol. In one afternoon, Trump undid all the positive things he accomplished in the last four years.”
Now, I realize saying that is going to piss some of you off. But as I’ve said before, it isn’t my job to tell you what you want to hear. My job is to speak honestly.
And here’s the blunt truth. Today we wake up to a country where Donald Trump is once again under threat of impeachment. Cabinet members are allegedly considering invoking the 25th Amendment to remove him from office before January 20th.
The newly sworn in Black Lives Matter Congresswoman from Missouri introduced a resolution to expel any Republican members of Congress who voted against certifying the election results claiming they “incited a domestic terror attack.”
Are these proper reactions?
Are they out of proportion?
Again, does it matter?
We have to operate in the reality in which we live.
No matter what his intention, thanks to the media narrative and the histrionics from members of Congress, Trump will go down in history as the sore loser who incited a mob to swarm the US Capitol in an effort to “overthrow our democracy.”
Sure, you can blame it on “Fake News.” But Donald Trump’s own choices yesterday sure as hell didn’t help him or (more importantly) the future of the America First Movement.
And no amount of “But Hillary’s supporters rioted in cities after she lost” arguments will change what the media and politicians will make of this.
This is exactly why, two days after the election, I offered this friendly advice:
I’m not saying don’t be angry. Be angry. But be smart. Never let anyone know what you’re thinking. Don’t give them ammunition; instead, keep your powder dry.
Yesterday, the idiots swarming the Capitol gave the media and the anti-America First politicians more ammunition than they could ever hope for.
And all that ammunition is being turned on us.
Big Tech will crack down so hard on conservatives, it’ll make our teeth rattle.
Trump himself has been suspended from Twitter over his tweets from yesterday afternoon. And the next time one of his tweets violates their capricious terms of service, he will be permanently banned.
Politicians will use what happened yesterday as a pretext for limiting free speech and freedom of assembly – and boy, did they get the perfect pretense for coming after our 2nd Amendment.
What’s worse, the media will triple-down on vilifying and marginalizing the working class voters who made up Trump’s base. That, in turn, will only further radicalize them.
The people who swarmed the Capitol yesterday will absolutely face jail time – unlike the BLM/Antifa rioters who burned and looted their way through DC this summer. And that disparity in “justice” will only anger and radicalize normal Americans even further.
There is no deescalating this; it’s a runaway train at this point.
And thanks in part to this swarm of idiots wanting to #StopTheSteal, the chance of Congress taking any steps to prevent future voter fraud is now at zero. Whereas the chance of Congress cracking down on our Liberties just got a great big boost.
And if you think I’m overstating things, keep in mind what our elected officials have gotten away with in the name of “keeping us safe” from a virus. Do you think these people will hesitate to use the full force of government to crack down on those they are openly calling “domestic terrorists?”
There is no net benefit from yesterday’s madness. None.
What happened in the Capitol on January 6, 2021 will reverberate through the country in ways that will chill us to the bone.
But, hey. At least they got to take cool selfies in Pelosi’s office!
